Cora’s TBR Challenge 2018

A new TBR Challenge for a new year! Is this the year you finally vanquish your TBR pile?

I don’t know about “vanquish,” but I am determined to chip steadily away at my ginormous TBR pile again this year. With the added data I collected last year (the number of books I purchased was an eye opener!), I’m making another change for this year’s challenge.

1. How many books from your TBR pile will you read? I’m actually setting two numbers for this year: one for books I’ve had for a while, and one for new books. A major reason my TBR pile is out of control is because I procure books faster than I can read them, and so many of my new books end up collecting dust on a shelf or languishing on my e-reader. This year, I’m pledging to read 18 books from my TBR pile and 18 books within two months of acquiring them.

2. How long have your books been waiting? For the purposes of this challenge, the “old” books I read must have been acquired by me or placed on my library TBR list before August 1, 2017. This means I can’t buy new books in January and count them toward my TBR Challenge come September–which I found myself doing at least once during the first year, and kind of defeats the purpose of the challenge.

3. How will you hold yourself accountable? Like years past, I’ll post here once a month to share my progress and see how you all are doing. I found that creating a Goodreads shelf (this year I’ll have 2: one for “old” books, and one for “new” booksand the dedicated page on this blog to be enormously helpful, too, so I’ll do both again. I’m a very visual person and being able to see the collection of books that I’ve read gives me a nice sense of accomplishment, which makes me want to read more TBR books.

4. What about adding more books to the pile? Like last year, I’m going to keep track of how many books I purchase with a Goodreads shelf. Numbers are powerful (especially to me, with my background in math), and it will be good to have a 2018 total to compare with 2017.

Who’s next? How are you going to vanquish your TBR pile this year?

Cora’s TBR Challenge Check-In

It’s the last day of 2017, fellow readers! Did you make your TBR Challenge goal this year?

As of this writing, I still have 4 books left to read. But I’m not giving up! It still feels like cheating but novellas count the same as novels, and I can read 4 novellas in a day 🙂  We’ll see if I can pull it off today… [UPDATE: I did it!]

I’ve learned a few things about my reading habits this year, too.

–>I am a consummate procrastinator, which I knew about myself long before this TBR Challenge, lol, but I didn’t realize it applied to the way I read. Apparently it does 🙂

–>I am apparently not able to ignore ebooks on sale–I’ve purchased 54 books this year, nearly all of them ebooks and nearly all while they were marked down in price.

–>Audiobooks are not just for migraines anymore, either. I haven’t had a major migraine in months and months (knock on wood!), and I primarily was listening to audiobooks during migraines (very softly, to try to keep my mind off the pain until I fell asleep). This year, I’ve been experimenting with different ways to listen when I’m not in pain, and have crossed a few audiobooks off the TBR list as a result.

Alright, I’m off to get those 4 books read before 2017 ends. But I’ll be back tomorrow with new goals for the new year!

Cora’s TBR Challenge Check-In

We’re nearly at the end of the year, fellow readers. Are you going to make your TBR Challenge goal?

I’ve got a little bit of a pile to finish before the end of the year–14 books for my overall reading goal, and 11 for my TBR Challenge. With just a few weeks left to go in the year, I’d better get reading! But since my writing deadlines are met for the year and my Day Job is slowing down for the holidays, I ought to have more time for books (though I’ve been saying that off and on all year, lol). I’m also in a outlining/plotting phase for the new novel I’m working on, which means I’ll be going through some of the research books I’ve previously purchased but have not yet read.

Now here’s hoping I can ignore all the holiday sales and not add to my mountainous TBR pile  😉

Books, TBR Challenge

Cora’s TBR check-In

Three quarters of the year has passed us by, fellow readers. Are you three-quarters of the way to your reading goal?

I, as has become the norm this year, am not. I have begun reading more since Scandalous was published, but the books I’ve chosen are mainly research books for my next novel. That’s enormously fun, but it doesn’t make my TBR pile any smaller. I’ll have to re-focus for October. I have managed to curb my one-clicking a bit this month, though, and that makes me feel better. I may not be reading my older books as much as I’d like, but at least I didn’t make the problem too much worse this month 🙂

My brain has been warring a bit over reading my recent purchases versus reading TBR books, too, so I’ve spent a fair amount of time scrolling through the pages of my e-reader just trying to decide which book to read. I need a new system for choosing or I’ll spend the rest of the year just swiping through the ever-growing list!
