Friday Favorites have been a bit sporadic these last few month, but they’re back this week with a very important one. Chawton House Library has recently discovered that, though well cared for, about 75% of their collection of historical manuscripts needs repairing in one form or another. The cost, they say, will be approximately £60,000.

Yikes!

But we can help!

The Chawton House Book Conservation Fund is accepting donations from both sides of the Atlantic, of any denomination. From their website:

£1 / $1.70 can buy document repair tape

£6 / $10 can buy unbleached cotton archival ribbon

£10 / $17 can buy an archival box to protect a fragile book

£100 / $162 can pay for a full set of conservation equipment including unbleached cotton archival ribbon, document repair tape and archival boxes

£300 / $486 can pay for a volunteer training day, giving a whole team the necessary skills to carry out vital conservation work

£500 / $809 can restore a complete volume

Friday Favorite: Death Comes to Pemberley

It’s finally here! Aired in December 2013 in the UK, part 1 of Death Comes to Pemberley hits American screens this Sunday as part of PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery series. The second part airs next Sunday (November 2).

From the PBS website:

“Six years after Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy have prevailed over pride, prejudice, the caddish Mr. Wickam and the frivolous Mrs. Bennet, a coach races up to Pemberley, Darcy’s palatial estate, with an hysterical Lydia shrieking, “Murder!” So continues Jane Austen’s timeless classic, Pride and Prejudice, in Death Comes to Pemberley, a star-studded adaptation of crime-writer P.D. James’ bestselling whodunit.”

Anna Maxwell Martin stars as Elizabeth Darcy, with Matthew Rhys as Austen’s hero. Matthew Goode and Jenna Coleman play Mr. Wickham and Lydia Bennet.

Friday Favorite: Benedict Cumberbatch is Richard III

Some of you will recall the marvelous cast in the BBC’s production of The Hollow Crown. Well hold on to your hats, because they’re at it again!

BBC Two is hard at work filming the next round of Shakespearean movies, titled The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses–with Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III and Judy Dench as Cecily, Duchess of York. Unfortunately, the air date is set for 2016. But the BBC released this image of Benedict in costume, and it’s our Favorite for this week:

I never pictured Benedict as Richard III, but this is going on my wishlist now 😀

Friday Favorite: Discover a New Love

This week’s Favorite is for you romance readers out there who like to save money. It’s a website/book club set up by Sourcebooks called Discover a New Love. There’s a blog, online events, chats with authors, and all kinds of fun stuff to participate in.

But the best part (for me, at least) is the books: DRM free (so you can read them on any e-reader or computer), $1.67 US per book for the Featured Selections each month (you buy a 6-pack of credits for $9.99 US, then use the credits whenever you’d like), open to international readers, and often include early access to titles before their scheduled release date. They’ve got all kinds of sub-genres, too: one stop shopping for historicals of every stripe, contemporaries, paranormals, romantic suspense, women’s fiction, and erotic romances.

I am not affiliated in any way with Sourcebooks–I’m just a fan of some of their authors and inexpensive books 🙂

Friday Favorite: “Musketeers” Comes to BBC America

Our Friday Favorite this week is a swashbuckling adventure. Starring Howard Charles, Santiago Cabrera, Tom Burke, and Luke Pasqualino as the four elite French soldiers, Musketeers is a treat Britons and Canadians have already sampled. And this Sunday (June 22) at 9 pm ET we finally get our chance in the US!

I’ve never read the original book, but fell head-over-heals for the Musketeers way back in 1993 when Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and Chris O’Donnell took on the rolls of the fierce foursome. It will be interesting to see how this version compares, and how it stands on its own. I’m nearly hooked just looking at the photos 😀

Friday Favorite: David Tennant and Benedict Cumberbatch read Mansfield Park

Mansfield Park is 200 years old this month, and BBC is celebrating! Beginning Monday, May 12, BBC Radio 4 will be re-airing a radio play of Jane Austen’s third novel that was first recorded in 2003, featuring David Tennant as Tom and Benedict Cumberbatch as Edmund. The 10-part broadcast will begin at 2:00 BST, and a new installment will air each day over the course of two weeks.

Not in the UK? Never fear, overseas listeners can tune in here.

Friday Favorite: Kindle Countdown Deals

I’ve always been budget conscious (my family would say cheap), but I’ve been especially so since I lost my job back in November. Even after the lawsuit settlements and publishers lowering prices on e-books, some are just too expensive for me.

But a girl still needs to read.

Our Friday Favorite this week is especially for those of us with tight purse strings and voracious reading appetites. Amazon has introduced Kindle Countdown Deals to their array of e-book discounts and sales. These are books that are enrolled in the KDP Select program (and so are self-published), that are discounted deeply for a short length of time.

The books span all genres, but are only available for Kindle devices and apps (the apps, though, are free). Clicking on a book brings up its details page, which includes the original price of the book, its discounted price, and a clock telling you how much longer the discount is good.

Do you have some e-book settlement money in your Amazon account? Using it on the Countdown Deals is a good way to find new authors without spending money out of pocket!
