Cora’s TBR Challenge Check-In

March is coming to an end, my fellow readers–how is your TBR Challenge progressing?

This has been a tough month for me. I left my teaching career behind and have gone Emma 2009into business for myself as a copy editor. Leaving the classroom was an immense relief, and I don’t regret it for a minute. But self-employment is scary, especially since I’m just beginning to build a client base. March has also been a month of changing weather, so it’s migraine season once again for me. Combine those two things, and you get little reading time for Cora.

On the bright side, my To Be Watched lists have begun to shrink. While reading and hollow-crownclose work have been difficult with migraine symptoms, watching historical movies and TV shows has been a nice way to pass the time (a bigger screen, farther away is less work for my eyes, and much more comfortable to my poor head). My favorite so far? A toss up between the 2009 adaptation of Emma with Jonny Lee Miller and Romola Garai, and The Hollow Crown series with Jeremy Irons as Henry IV and Tom Hiddleston as Henry V.

  1. Cora, you are brave setting up your own business and I wish you every success.

I’ve been suffering from a viral infection over the past week which has been very debilitating but, at least, I’ve done a fair amount of reading. The only trouble is I now have four reviews to write for my blog.

  2. Sending your way many good wishes for success in your new business. I hope you can conquer the headaches. I happen to think the Miller/Garai version of EMMA is the best, I love it. As for THE HOLLOW CROWN it isn’t on my TV lineup but I hope one of the streaming services will pick it up.

    1. Thanks for the good wishes! I need all the help I can get 🙂

I went out and ordered the DVD set of The Hollow Crown because I couldn’t wait for a streaming service to pick it up. Hopefully one will soon, though!

  3. Hey Cora, came over from the HF Facebook page. The 2009 is my favourite version of Emma. I have never heard of The Hallow Crown, I must check it out. Have you ever seen Reign, it is like a farfetched story of the life of Queen Mary of Scot but I LOVE it. I am impatiently waiting for season 3 to surface online.

    1. Welcome! I have not seen Reign–I can never seem to turn off the history-loving part of my brain, so I don’t deal well when shows get things wrong. It looks like fun, though 🙂

      1. It is, I watched a trailer for Hallow Crowns and it seems that the woman who plays Queen Mary in Reign is in there. I am an avid History Student but I do allow myself to enjoy certain historical series because I know films are mostly to entertain. For me if I want straight facts (which is subjective), I watch a documentary.

  4. I like the Emma movie with Gwyneth Paltrow & Jeremy Northam.(he is dreamy!), but I will check out the other version. I got laid off from one of my jobs – I was getting reading done at work because it was so slow (they closed the office). So, now that I haven’t worked there for a wk, I have been reading less! Going to the gym, walking & getting some organizing done. As for reading, I finally started the Mackenzies series & read The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. Loved it so much! I only read 7 books this month, total of 29 for the year so far. I am glad that you are pursuing your passion & leaving behind the heartache at work. I wish you luck! I am going to start figuring out what I want to do in a month or so. Hope you & Carol feel better. Illness & migraines are no fun at all!

    1. I need to watch that version! Netflix had it, then it disappeared, so I’ll have to track it down. Too bad about the job, but yay for Ian Mackenzie! Loved that one too 🙂

      1. I actually own the Gwyneth movie, but I got the other one at the library & loved it! I was trying to figure out where I knew the guy from & my daughter said he is from Elementary & plays Sherlock. Jonny Lee Miller.
